Sažetak izlaganja: The goal of this paper is to examine what communities emerge through the presence of an airfield or airport and how members of these communities navigate personal and social identities and how memories associated with aviation inform these identities. This challenges a prevailing vision of airports as “non-places”, locations with no “organic society”, to borrow from the words of French anthropologist Marc Augé. Rather, airports can take many shapes and sizes, from grass landing strips for remote control model aircraft, gliders and ultralight aircraft, to the mega-airports of Frankfurt, Paris, Hong Kong and Dubai that Augé laments. By highlighting the everyday practices and attitudes of those who work, live and socialize in and around airports, this project will expand the vision of the social sciences in aviation setting. The work also complements existing ethnographic work on aviation through the passenger and cabin crew experience to demonstrate the diversity of communities that exists in these spaces that is otherwise overlooked by academic research and popular media.
